Metal Sisters: Alexis Brown

Could someone kindly explain why I'm just now learning about this goddess?  I'm always on the look-out for brown girls who rock out - it shouldn't have taken this long!!!!

Alexis Brown does the vocals for metal band Straight Line Stitch where her good looks, siren-like voice, and famous "windmill" hair whip have amassed a large fan base.  I also like how her band's maintaining the "long hair on guys" look which I've always liked about men in rock.
I'm an entertainer, I sing for a heavy metal band called Straight Line Stitch. I'm just your normal average woman who loves to laugh, likes to read, likes to watch scary movies in her free time, & travel the world.

~ Alexis Brown
Ah...the humility.

Straight Line Stitch is a really awesome band; their guitarist officially owns my heart.  I've  saved you guys the trouble of looking up their music, and you better say thank you because this band is addictive.  You can't watch just one video.

  1. Don't forget Tamar Kali. I used to have a few of her tracks before my computer crashed. And who can forget Skin of Skunk Anansie? They've recently been touring and releasing new music. Also maybe a year or two ago I learned that the lead singer for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is Korean American.

    1. I've gone ahead and inducted her into the Black Girls Club. Some dickhead on Youtube said Black people needed to stay away from metal.

      As if.

  4. For the record "Bleeding Heart Theory" is my fav. They were in Sac at Ace of Spades but I missed them cause I was planning to see them with a friend but she never got back to me. She's very good screamo metal.

It's unfortunate that you often get token representation in these kinds of groups whether it be on gender, racial as well as gender/racial lines. But I appreciate groups like Straight Line Stich, Skunk Anansie (it's half and half), Kittie, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sevendust, Hootie and the Blowfish (now solo Darius Rucker), etc. Oh and country sisters represent. There were some one hit wonders like Minnie Riperton (Midnight in the Oasis) and A Taste of Honey. I highly recommend Rissi Palmer. She did a cover for "No Air" that I rather enjoyed.

  5. I'm not really a metal girl. But I'll introduce her to all the metal heads that I love. :)

  6. This was a wonderful kick in the ass back to metal. I got out of it when I went to college but damn if I'm not craving something to scream about again.

  7. HI Ms. Ankhesen!

This is Kymie...coming out of the wood works to make my first blogosphere comment in a YEAR meaningful :p A friend of mine, Scott Picone, is in a fantastic metal band, FERITAS, and they will be playing with Straight Line this weekend in Townson, MD! (I believe tickets are still on sale if people are interested--I'll drop a line of Facebook to get details)

PS.--Haven't missed one of your posts yet. You know how to keep a brown woman empowered in these trying times. You and your blogs are truly a fine wine-they get better with each sip.

    2. HI!!! After a major job change and a re-location, life has finally started to settle down. I had to do some serious reflection on what I wanted in life, who was worth being in my life, and what amount/type of crap was I willing to take to reach my goals. You know, some REAL house cleaning.

How have you been? Pretty damn fabulous from the photos I see. I hope it was a good thought! :P
