Oh, 'Rika, 'Rika

La Mission (2009), another one of those good, POC-dominated films which goes under the radar, stars Benjamin Bratt and Erika Alexander (of Living Single fame).

Bratt's character is a strong ex-con who's deeply in touch with his indigenous American heritage.  He speaks scornfully of the "the conquerors who forced their language and religion" down his ancestors' throats.  Alexander is once-battered woman who lives in the same building.  She's Bohemian, au natural, and rides her bike everywhere.

And this, folks, is how you film a love scene.

Seriously, Nicole...I cannot thank you enough.

  3. EVERYONE here at the Black Girls Club needs to SEE this film. Benjamin put everything into this film. He financed it because he knew Hollywhite was not interested in a love story about a Black woman and an indigenous- American man.

    1. Awesome. Will add it with 'Unbowed' to my Must Buy list. Gotta support these films that go against Hollywood's rigid grain.

It hit me yesterday that there aren't even films for older folks to enjoy, but that's a grouse for another place and time.
