It's not that it bothers me to see her cast with White actors, and yes to answer your question--I am tired of it, because it seems to be she's the "actress by default" when it comes to BW/WM casting, but what bothers me the most is that Hollywood is still uncomfortable with seeing White Men with Black Women. There are only a handful of BW/WM films that pale in comparison to BM/WW films. As a lightskinned sista---I am SICK and TIRED of seeing fairskinned European featured actresses always cast as the love interest to their White co-star. I would rather see (and in my opinion I find more attractive) seeing a beautiful dark-skinned ebony starlett with a White male co-star. Can we get more movies like this...please??I'm all for interracial love couples on screen...in fact I embrace and relish in it. But I am tired of seeing the Zoe Saldanas (and the other Zoe--"Kravitz") always cast alongside White actors as if they are the only black actresses in Hollywood. PUH-leeeze.
Well, I feel as if Hollywood and society in general like to act as if being dark-skinned and beautiful/sexually desirable are mutually exclusive things. So when casting for a wife, girlfriend, object of desire, they don't tend to give too many brown-skinned women a chance. If you are dark-skinned, you are going to be sassy or sometimes proud and powerful, but never a woman anyone wants to be with.I mean, look at Angela Bassett. What kind of man who likes women and has at least one functioning eye wouldn't be interested? But I've never seen her portrayed as anyone a non-black man would want. She can be alongside white men in movies but they apparently never want to see her naked...
Zoe is like a modern day Rae Dawn Chong. She's the "safe" Black chick they like to pair with white guys.
Yes.I saw that movie poster in the lobby during one of my multiple trips to see TDKR and I was like...*sigh*I ain't mad at Zoe for doing her thing and getting paid while she still can. But like Jamie said, she's the de facto BW for Hollywhite.
I this is because there are not enough roles available/allowed for black women to play in Hollywood. Zoe is the it girl of the moment so she will get the few roles available.
Funny, I thought you were talking about Zoe Kravitz. But the only reason she's even seen as a viable, believable love interest for white men is b/c they believe that being Hispanic and being Black are mutually exclusive. So no matter how many interviews she does where she said "I'm Black" you get choruses of black and white people who have deemed her everything from Black and Jewish to not Black at all b/c she is (insert Latin American nationality here b/c they NEVER get it right in regards to which countries her BLACK parents are from). And I still say that her Hispanic ethnicity makes people SEE her as being lighter than she is, plus her features aren't "European" if we want to pretend that is a thing. But she is Hollywood skinny, but so is Gabrielle Union, who in my opinion has the same figure AND features but is chocolate brown.
I thought Gabrielle had the fuller body, though. Along with the better skin.
Gabrielle Union has a fuller face, and you are right, probably a slightly fuller body, but they are still both acceptably Hollywood slim. But yeah, I think you right. I just think that Gabrielle Union SHOULD be an acceptable love interest for a white man. But I do agree...Gabrielle Union has about 6 years on her, but her skin is better and she just looks better nourished and healthier over all (so her face just has a rounder and more youthful look to it). Zoe has those huge creases. Kind of like Jennifer Hudson has now, which makes me think she needs a plate of sandwiches. I don't know anything about her, but yeah, when people ask me about my hair and skin, it's funny how they don't realize that sufficient water AND food as part of that equation. If you aren't willing to eat enough food, then you have to be content with bad skin and hair. Was Gabrielle Union married to an Asian man on that show that was cancelled before I could see it ?
Yes. She played Zoey Andata, a criminal lawyer engaged to FBI Agent Demetri Noh (John Cho) on FlashForward. After the hiatus, you didn't miss much. Their relationship ended in shambles.
Zoey is seen as exotic and Gabby "plain ole Black".....sadly it seems that we are much more exotic when it is thought we are mixed with something on not just African-American. An example...on dating websites I get approached by men from all different racial and ethnic backgrounds...they flirt like crazy until they ask me are you Indian, Arab, Latina,etc...or where I'm from..... When I tell them I am an African-American from the USA they tend to lose interest......I am not exotic.....If I say I am Indian or Latina I would get much more play.....
Hahahaha...I'm sure that non-black men who find you attractive ask you if you are something else. I had a friend who more or less got accosted by a WW who was gushing over how beautiful she was and demanded to know where she was from and wasn't satisfied with the answer Detroit even though that is all that there is (and before that, parents and grandparents were just by down South). She said the lady just kept insisting that she somehow could not be right, so I think she had to just back away. I've also heard people who are okay with black as long as it's not "American black" and had to sit through a white person with a fetish listing off the ways that black women from the Caribbean and Africa were better in every way. (I'm plain old American by the way).
Seriously, though. Show me something new already. Show me Zoe with a Latino guy or an Asian guy.
Now, Ankh, you know how HollyWTF is steadfast about their formulas.
You know Hollywhite, as well as white folks, can't seem to grasp the idea that poc have interracial relationships and they aren't involved.
And formulaic it is. All those scenes looked cut and pasted from a dozen other movies.
It's interesting that they don't put her with Latino guys since her ethnicity is used to downplay/erase the fact that she is a black woman. So in the movie Colombiana, the fictional parents weren't Afro-Latino, or at least were not meant to be viewed that way judging from the pictures she had of them. But she's an interesting case b/c she got a lot of hate as a black woman in that Star Trek movie didn't she? Yet they will sometimes act that she has on black ancestry. White people will just never admit all of the raping and pillaging that they have done around the world. And I think that is more b/c it damages their whole "but they are all so ugly" line as opposed to fact that it is morally reprehensible.
I'm so glad I'm not alone in this ish. Zoe can keep earning that money but I'm so sick of Hollywack's bs. This is why I can barely tolerate movies now. Same shit, different years and toilets.
Sorry, this is Lifecoaster.
This is why I don't watch much tv or go to the movies....it tends to be white and boring.....
Am I tired of watching Zoe always being the love interest of White men? Absolutely.Im not so much of her being in these roles with White men,but that is all all Hollywood seems to want to pair her up with when it comes to her being in romantic roles. She's even starred in a movie not that long ago with a mostly Black cast, but she had a White guy play her love interest in it as well. I don't know if it's her doing or that of Hollywood ,but it's becoming boring. Maybe I'm wrong, but the last picture she played in with a POC as her love interest was in DRUMLINE with Nick Cannon when she was just beginning to peak in Hollywood. Now that Zoe has gotten her foot in the door, all POC's seems to have become irrelevant. To some degree, I'm beginning to get bored with Zoe because Hollywood only make it seems that beautiful Black black women only comes every so often , will over expose you and eventually, become boring(eg Halle Berry). It's like Hollywood( or maybe she) only see the big money if she only star in shows/movies with White guys. Nothing wrong with broadening you fan base and career, but don't forget us and other POC's in the process.Gabrielle Union was mentioned on this topic . So far, I never get tired of her. I love her because she is diversified in her acting. She seems to have no problem acting as love interest to Black men men and other POC's,let alone being a very attractive woman. A lot of men from all corners find her to be sexy, but she's not light enough to be exotic according to Hollywood's standards. No POC can truly be who they are in in Tinseltown unless they are willing to deny a piece of themselves. In this case, you cannot be too dark/Black to be a top entertainer there.Besides White guys, I would love for Zoe to play a love interest to Black and/or POC men. In general, I want to see her mix up her roles a bit and surprise us.
Gabrielle Union was mentioned on this topic . So far, I never get tired of her.Amen. The woman is legend, and she really tries. You can tell she gives each performance her all, but I guess her booty's too big or skin must be too dark, because I always gets a close-but-no-cigar feeling with her career.Besides White guys, I would love for Zoe to play a love interest to Black and/or POC men. In general, I want to see her mix up her roles a bit and surprise us.I think she tried with Avatar, Star Trek, and Columbiana, but that's not what Hollywood wants for her. They want bland, simpering whitewashed films like this for her in which she just plays some white dude's arm candy.
Agreed. I guess that's why I'm bored with most of her films these days because of what you said about being every mans eyecandy. It's getting tired..the same song. Im glad that you mentioned STAR TREK.I forgot that she did star with Zachary Pinto. For some reason,I never got to see Columbiana.Did see Avatar. Maybe one day, shell notice this and will say something about it,but opening her mouth would mean demolishing her career...an unfortunate thing. that happens when minorities try to speak up in Hollywood.
