Sloane Stephens is on her A-Game

19 year old Sloane Stephens from Plantation, Florida BEATS her idol Serena Williams in the Australian Open quarterfinals. Sloane will be advancing to the finals! Now, for those people out there seizing this chance to trash talk Serena have a special place in hell. Americans owe Serena a debt of gratitude, and when Sloane starts slaying one too many pretty white girls the crowds will tire of her too. I support them both. I wish the Sloane the best of luck. If Sloane wins the whole thing this will make history.

  1. This is interesting...when I heard that Serena lost a match yesterday, I didn't think much of it, I didn't even know who her opponent was. Now I see that she was black too!
I mainly watch the French Open, and sometimes Wimbledon. I'm not really into tennis.

In the interview video, Serena seemed brave about her health issues, she said she did her best, with all that horrible pain. I think that Sloane has some merit in her victory though, she's not #25 in the world at the age of 19 for nothing.

  2. LOL - it took a Black Princess to dethrone a Black Queen.

    1. You know The Powers That Be are salty as hell about that. I mean, there goes their chance of bleaching the melanin out of the top spots of tennis! Muwahahahahaha! >=D

    2. *giggles!*

      Exactly!

That's how people need to be looking at this. Keepin it all in the family, yo!
When I heard they were going up against each other I was like hmm win-win if you ask me :)

    3. People are already trying to pit them against each other by saying Sloane is "classier". Let's see how they feel when she starts slaying white girls left and right.

I agree with keeping it in the family. Sloane better watch out she has a target on her back.

    4. I'm glad you point this out, because she really does have bulls-eye on her ass. I read an article about her victory in which referred to her as an "African American beauty" and I immediately thought, "Let's see how long that attitude lasts. 'Cause if at the age of 19, she can defeat Serena...."

Folks need to get over this ish. Before the Williams sisters, no one paid attention to tennis unless it involved foreign players. Before Tiger Woods, no one gave a shit about golf.

And before Gabby Douglas, gymnastics was a forgotten sport.

      ...See a pattern here?

    5. Yes, we all see that pattern. But we also know that folks will kick, scream, and fight before they admit that the status quo is shifting. Now if we could get some POC brothers to dominate in men's tennis, I'll be ready with my pop corn for THAT fireworks display.

    6. Black folks make it better.

I hate the African-American beauty quip. They would never hire her to play a heroine even in a black romance film. Her looks doesn't matter her skills are where it's at. Pointing out her race is saying that she's pretty for a black girl and nothing more. Why can't she just be pretty? I'm also a Floridian and I'm feeling pretty good right now.

    7. You mean that we take everything they do and make it BETTER? We're like BASF...

  3. It seems to be the latest world ranking of female tennis players:
    http://tennis.about.com/od/rankings/l/bl_wta_tour_rankings.htm

Now look who's 25th in the list. And then who's 26th. LOL This girl will go far :)

  4. You know they are always mad when they don't have a "pretty" blond thing to swoon over. I know some people seem happy that Serena lost but clearly wish one of those plain white girls that they elevate had beaten her.
I hope that if it is indeed time to pass on the mantle, she wears it well.
She is dark-skinned and has muscle definition so she will be insulted for sure.

    1. Yep...soon she'll be that "fat black Serena-wannabe bitch", and because her first name's "Sloane", the "she's a man" jokes will start.

    2. I was hoping no one would have to go there but I was thinking it too.

  5. Heads up. She made it into the semi-finals which should be Thursday (our Wednesday night I guess). The finals are this coming Saturday. She will be playing world number one Azarenka. Hopefully Na Li will knock out Sharapova in the other semi-final. She should be able to crack the top ten if she gets to the finals and win. I've watched tennis for years. She (and the Williams sisters) are not the only women of color (sistas) that play. They just haven't been that successful, but a lot of junior players are coming up. As for men of color there are a few (more than women I think), but the state of men's tennis is dismal at best. Which is sad because I started out watching men's tennis in the beginning.

Ankh, I can't say that Sloane dethroned Serena. The last person to beat Serena on the way to a slam has never won against her again! That would be Sharapova! She beat Serena at Wimbledon in 2004 and Serena opened up a can that she has not been able to close! So Sloane had better up her A game cause a healthy Serena will be coming for her.

    1. Oh, I don't think anyone is saying that. Serena isn't that well at the moment, and while she's still a young woman, she's been playing for a long time and her ability to recover or overpower people while still injured diminishes. It doesn't take one thing from her legacy.
Sloane is 19, Serena is 31 and was cleaning up the junior courts when this child was BORN.
It's not a dethroning so much as a passing of the torch, although as Serena has shown us, it ain't over 'til it's over.

    2. Yeah I got what she was saying. I'm just a die hard Serena fan since she won her first Grand Slam. I have seen a lot of tennis players stop around her age which is still young, but they work them to death. Plus I'm sure that no matter how much they love the sport it can get old after a while. I just wish there were more players like Sloane. Venus and Serena have always talked about more black women playing tennis.

    3. Oh yeah I knew Serena was hurt. I can relate. The days of snapping back are long gone!

  6. The Voice,

Oh yeah. Now that Serena broke her tennis racket, you know they really going to have a field day with it.I can't wait until she play with the white players.Media is going to do a Serena on her. I agree with you about the pretty for a Black girl mantra. God knows, there weren't /still isn't a bunch of pretty White female tennis players. Who can forget Martina Navratilova? Great player, but that face.. OMG..!! She looked more like a man than my brother .She wasn't even downed as poorly as Serena.

    1. I think they were scared of Martina! She was the first player to combine nutrition and weight training into her program. When she walked on the court like she wanted to fight! Actually she stalked around the court. I would have loved to see her play Serena though. Or see Serena play Monica Seles.

  7. BS flag waving like crazy! Though I've seen everyone including the Williams do it I hate these lame ace time outs when they are getting beat. Enjoy number one while you can. Serena is coming!
