Black Girls' Night Out: Olivia Pope

Not-so-fun fact: Olivia Pope has THE worst taste in men.

Remember how hyped we were that the White House drama was over and the preview showed Liv possibly getting a new man?  *shakes head*  We got punked.

I'm not sure where Shonda Rhimes is going with is, but I'm willing take a leap of faith with her over the disturbing hunk of fail I witnessed last night.

First off, the episode starts 10 months after the last one.  I thought, "Whew.  Good.  We done moved on from that craziness."  We learn that Olivia is an avid swimmer and uses swimming to deal with her heartbreak.  We see her meet the New Guy (portrayed by Scott Foley).  To be honest, I like his sense of humor; he has this offbeat sort of charm.

But alas...we are being toyed with.

So James and Cyrus have a christening for their adorable daughter in which the Prez is the godfather and Liv is the godmother.  Liv and the Prez, reunited after 10 months give each other this weird stare during the ceremony.  Before the priest can finish saying, "Amen," these two have bounded down a hall, where the Prez drags Liv off into a closet and tries to tear off Liv's clothes.  He gets pimp-slapped.

Still...we're being toyed with.

The two of them go at it the way they have countless times before, and I'm sitting there screaming at the TV demanding, "WTF, Shonda???  Really???  We're still on this mess ten months later???"

And THEN, when they pull their clothes on and head out the closet door, the Prez tries to give her yet another brush off as she confesses that election-rigging - *gasp* - was a mistake (seriously, Liv?  Ya think?).  And though I genuinely admire how actor Tony Goldwyn is growing into this role and becoming more convincing with each episode, it doesn't change the fact that the Prez is a disgusting pig, and this scene made my stomach lurch.

I get it, he loves her in his own twisted little way, and he's shown a consistent willingness to leave his wife for her.  But while giving Liv the brush off for the second episode in a row, the Prez flat out states that things are over between them, "even if [he] can't control [his] erections around [her]" - that is disgusting.

It's bad enough he used to have her summoned and surveiled.  Not to mention all those times he used to feel her up or get physical with her when people were around.  Their last two conversations have made me flesh crawl and I'm ready for "Olitz" to be "Over", like, last year.

But back to the issue of Liv's taste in the men.

See, the Prez sent out a specialized team to release some CIA agents being held as hostage.  Turns out, the team arrives at "the wrong address".  It's then revealed the White House has a mole.

Flash back to Liv flirting with the New Guy over the phone.  He talks about how "people-watching" is his thing, and it turns out he has a camera in every room of Liv's apartment.

Say it with me, ladies: Shitty...taste...in men.

(Fun facts, by the way: actor Guillermo Diaz ("Huck") is openly gay, and when it comes to stabbing people, Quinn is apparently "a natural.")

And that's why I can't be bothered with Scandal. I NEVER liked her being with him; I never liked what it represented, and I knew it would end badly.

    Shonda, let's move on, please.

Ever since I finished watching that epi I've been PRAYING Shonda is going to go somewhere awesome and unexpected with all of this. PRAYING. I can't even with that whole erections thing: Cannot EVEN!

The only two bright moments where her choosing swimming as the preferred Black girl's mode of exercise (yay!) and that moment between Quinn and Huck over the DB lol
....but I'm still PRAYING. you hear me Shonda? PRAYING.

      All this.

  3. Shonda is NOT moving on from Olivia and Fitz. They are the bread and butter of this show, and Shonda is selling their dysfunctional "love" for all its worth.

Shonda stated *AGAIN* in interviews and on Twitter after Thursday's episode that Olivia and Fitz will *NEVER* be over. Why do you think Olivia's new love interest is a stalker?

There is NO justification for ANY woman - forget even a BLACK woman - to WILLINGLY engage in a relationship with a man who is verbally abusive. Also, Fitz almost ALWAYS manhandles Olivia! He grabbed and pushed her into the closet in the last episode, and in the flashback scenes, he usually is grabbing at her when she is trying to have a conversation. A previous elevator scene was close to attempted rape. He is anxious to have sex with her. That is lust, not love. WTF?

I am not asking for Olivia Pope to be a role model. No, not at all. However, it is disgusting how she allows Fitz to walk all over her and discard her like a piece of sexual trash. I can't even place all of the blame on Fitz because Olivia ALLOWS it time after time and will continue because it's true love in her mind!

Olivia can tell Edison off when Edison was right about her being involved in illegal actions, yet she stands still and quiet when Fitz tells her that she is a sexual tool to get him off?! The last time you saw the man, he called you a mistress that he screwed but not good enough to marry, and now he practically called you a whore and you say nothing?! Olivia was weak as hell for that.

Olivia told Edison that she wants painful love. Well, she's getting it.

If this show were written and executive produced by a non-black person, I truly think there would have been serious uproar after this last episode. Disgusting and totally a Jezebel scene.

    1. That is the problem. A lot of women DO put up with this same crap over and over again! I can only hope that maybe Shonda is holding up a mirror; so some women can see themselves and get out of the situation.

    2. Yes, women DO put up with the crap, and some move on.

However, Shonda has REPEATEDLY stated that Olivia and Fitz's relationship is true love and that they will NEVER be done with each other. In another interview, Shonda said that they are the endgame couple. In the interim, they will - especially Fitz - treat each other horribly.

I would have no problem if Shonda planned to show that Olivia realizes that her relationship with Fitz is poisonous, but Shonda does not. Fitz is Olivia's past, present and future.

    3. This is sad. A televised version of Rih and Chris.

    4. Hopefully Shonda's lying her ass off just to shut people up. It's possible. If not, she can expect ratings to dip at minimum and fall enough that ABC justifies not renewing the series.

    5. I don't know what's going on with writers/showrunners in the industry, but some of them seem to be forgetting that these types of relationships can't withstand/sustain a 5-7 year series.

It would be like if Joss Whedon had made Buffy/Angel the crux of the entire BtVS series.

    6. Maybe that is the point. They don't plan on it lasting that long.

    7. *wince*

Don't tell me that. Some of these people need these roles. Have you checked their careers? This show is necessary, especially for Guillermo Diaz. From his Wikipedia page:

After having portrayed several Mexican thugs (cholos), Díaz was cast in 2010 as a Latino gangster named Poh Boy in Cop Out. When asked about being typecast, he stated, "I [used to worry], but not really anymore. Now I’m just grateful that I’m working. I try to make everything different."[5]

No, no, no, no, no, no.

And I'd hate to think where Columbus Short would be right now without this show.

    8. However, Shonda has REPEATEDLY stated that Olivia and Fitz's relationship is true love and that they will NEVER be done with each other.

True love? According to whose definition? Maybe she's using Olitz as therapy then, because IDGAF what s/he says, what's being show on the telly isn't love. It's assault with dubious consent. If she allows Olivia to continue this kind of behavior because she says that it's love, she's already ruined the character and y'all shouldn't expect better. What kind of endgame is that? This man treats her like property, a whore...but they're gonna be ride or die forever? That's some fucked-up warped thinking and absolutely nothing romantic about it. Shonda, good day.

I would have no problem if Shonda planned to show that Olivia realizes that her relationship with Fitz is poisonous, but Shonda does not. Fitz is Olivia's past, present and future.

We don't really know Shonda's plans. She can say whatever the fuck she likes right now, but if ratings take a nose dive because fans aren't feeling a once powerful woman reduced to a white boy's cum bucket, she will change her mind quick, fast and in a hurry. That is, if she wants the show to remain on air. Apparently, the show has strayed from its original course.

I simply refuse to believe that she's okay with this.

Whatever. Y'all can have this fucking show.

    9. The ratings are much better now than they used to be. The series was on the cusp of cancellation until its ratings started increasing in December with the "Who Shot Fitz" storyline and promotional campaign.

ABC has started to promote the show much more than it did, and it is using Olivia + Fitz and their sexual and 'romantic' chemistry as the basis of the promotional campaign. Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn conduct JOINT interviews now. A few weeks ago, they went on a media blitz to Good Morning America and The View, and they will soon been featured together in TV GUIDE. This show has morphed from Olivia Pope and Associates to the Olivia & Fitz Show.

Why is it that we know WAY more about Fitz's past and present, have seen his family, etc. than we do Olivia's? We have not seen one member of Olivia's family nor have we seen any of her friends outside of Abby, the annoying co-worker. Fitz's man pain has become the focus on the show.

      Which explains the ratings jump.

We need to know more about Olivia ASAP. This is her show, season 2 will be over soon, and we know close to nothing about this woman.

  4. I was hoping that you brought this up. I don't know what to say other than being disappointed with his episode of Scandal.

Ok,the series isn't meant to be innocent or to portray Olivia as such.Still, I expect a certain degree of respect and romance from it.I've watched similar pictures, yet for some reason, the picture was romantic and beautiful. The character wasn't being screwed. The male character would make passionate love to the female character. There was a connection with them....while that person may have not/may leave their spouse, but the viewer feels love coming from the character. This wasn't Shondas best work
    .
This is how I wanted to be like.. boy meets girls...don't realize that they are in love ...keep denying it..they spontaneously kiss each not knowing why.. realize that they're in love you know the rest. Let's face it,no good can come from an adulterous relationship, but Scandal is a ficticious series and its about arousing the viewing audience. Unfortunately with this episode, I was completely turned off by this episode. This wasn't making love, they were screwing each other..no love there whatsoever.OM(freaking)G! I don't know if Shonda thought that her audience would approve of this, but I didn't. Actually, it embarrassed the living day lights out of me . I could imagine how producers/writers now:" Oh yeah..I know how we can get a Scandal like show... let the Black woman look like a dog and just have sex" I don't like that at all!

Since Olivia is supposed to be having an affair with Prez, but I wantthem to do a Charles Kerault or Mark Sanford number...to have a long term relationship and /or marry not to be somebody's freak in the bed. I'm going to still watch Scandal, but I'm hoping for better. Even with junk like the one we seen this past Thursday, too much stuff like that on a constant basis will hurt a show. It wouldn't be surprised if she got some complaints about that episode.

  5. Hmmm President Ghost still ain't shit? You don't say? I swear I am feeling so vindicated right now. I hated him from jump street and now everyone can see why. Even if the show does a complete wraparound and have Olivia and Fitz get together it will be because Olivia's standards are so low. Not because he deserves her. Keep trying to wash that blood off your hands Fitz grime stays with your trife ass. -__- Can we get Idris Elba on this show please? So liv can see what a real man is like?
