Halle Berry in "Extant"

"Feel free...to hate on me."

I'll be honest; I'm iffy about this one. I haven't been a Halle fan since the 1990s, and even then, I was more into Nia Long and Angela Bassett and Gabrielle Union. Hell, I liked Monica Calhoun even more than I did Halle, because Halle Berry was Zoe Saldana before Zoe...if you catch my drift.

Let's run through shall we?
"Extant," a new scripted series starring Halle Berry, will debut on July 2 at 9 p.m. EST, CBS announced on Wednesday (Jan. 15).

The mystery thriller from Steven Spielberg is about a female astronaut (Berry) who tries to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space.

Okay, let's start there. I dig this premise. Woman of color as a lead? Check. Educated professional? Check. Has a family to help flesh out her characterization? Check!
According to a statement from CBS, her experiences "lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history." Berry will co-executive produce the series.
Power to influence the world around her? Check, check!
CBS discussed "Extant" at the Television Critics Association winter press tour and reporters noted that Berry's character would return from the space mission pregnant with an alien baby who "poses a threat to android son." Yes. This is actually the plot.
Huh? Come again?
Emmy winner Camryn Manheim joined the "Extant" cast as a series regular in January and will play Berry's best friend and closest confidant.
Okay...lemme tell y'all something. I'm a fan of Camryn Manheim. I am not, however, a fan of Hollywhite and its "best friend" concept where women of color and white women are concerned.  Bonnie Bennett of The Vampire Diaries comes to mind, not to mention Tara Thornton on True Blood, and Lacey Porter on Twisted.

That's right...Auntie K is going to be cynical this year.  Done had my heart broke too many times and ain't got time for this anymore.

Take this part out and you may actually have an interesting show.

  3. Aside from the pregnancy part, I'm curious. CBS is not my favorite after that Joss Carter stunt, but I do want to support Halle. I'll at least give it a chance to see if it sparks my interest. I like sci-fi, so I do want to see where they're going with this. It's a straight to series pick up, so at least we don't have to worry about it getting cancelled after only a few episodes.

Which reminds me...the benefit of having a lead like Halle is that she has some pull. She has some influence. She can put her foot down if/when things start to go south.
