Jada Pinkett Smith is leaving a lot of Gotham fans distraught after revealing that she will not return to the show next season. During an interview on Live With Kelly and Michael, Pinkett Smith said she only signed on for one year. She's not kidding. We've been meaning to do a series on Fish but Gotham wasn't all that interesting for a while, and we wanted to see how she'd be developed. The character of Fish Mooney is brand new to the Batman universe, and I bet is specifically created for Smith. In other words, I think of her as a Lure; skepticism about a pre-Batman story was dimmed when she signed on. Instead of being cynical, viewers got curious. And now that she's helped build up the fanbase, she's leaving.
“I don’t think so, no. I signed for a year and the year is up,” the actress said in response to a question regarding her return. “But there are some great things coming ahead on Gotham, believe you me. There’s a lot of good stuff coming.”
There’s no word on how Pinkett Smith’s character will leave the show, but during a recent episode, Fish Mooney gouged out her own eye. In an interview with Extra, Pinkett Smith alluded to a possible surprise as Fish Mooney makes her exit from Gotham.
“You never know what Fish might have up her sleeve,” she told Extra. (Source)
People have to understand: before the crazy antics of Cookie Lyon, there was the sheer demented ruthlessness of Fish.
A flamboyant nightclub owner with a distinctive manner and style, Maria Mercedes "Fish" Mooney stood at the right hand of mafia boss Don Carmine Falcone. And once she began to sense restlessness and disloyalty in his ranks, she sought to take his place.
Fish was feared and reviled by many before her fall, but despite their feelings towards her, everyone knew to show respect. Within the first episode or so she had Detectives Bullock and Gordon strung upside down for the slaughter (Bullock took the wrong tone with her). Falcone stopped it because the cop-killing hadn't been cleared with him. Since Bullock and Fish were also sleeping together off and on, he felt the need to discuss his little near-death experience with her, to which she gave a classic response.
After a while, I just tuning into Gotham to see what crazy new thing Fish would say or do to someone, and week after week, I was not disappointed. I remember an episode where she refers to her much younger lover as "that boy I keep around for exercise." Until Gotham got clueless and boring and her role was diminished a bit, Fish's singular brand of insanity was a jaw-dropping, indescribable wonder to behold.
Her plan to replace Falcone fails, of course, and while on the run, she's kidnapped and stowed in a basement mansion on an island where prisoners are being used for spare parts. Once Fish starts to get an idea of what's going on, she starts running the prison within 24 hours. Soon no more prisoners are being taken without her say-so. She forces their captors to bring her to their leader, when they take the wrong tone with her and talk about taking her eyes whether she cooperates or not, Fish scoops out her own left eyeball with a nearby spoon, then steps on it...just so she's clear about who's in charge.
So you can imagine my dismay about her leaving the show right when her unique brand of crazy had just reached a whole new level.
And since we only have Fish Mooney for one season, I wanted to do this humble tribute to another aspect of her which caught our eye: her sense of fashion. While I love Cookie's clothes, Fish is pure Villainness Chic.
