Black Girls' Night Out: Keating & Pope

I know some of y'all are prolly wondering why the hell I'm still subjecting myself to this.  I'll tell you: much like Sleepy Hollow (which I will be getting to later), Season 5 of Scandal is making an attempt to keep people interested. Outing Liv and the Prez was a bold move.  Adding Marcus Walker to the team was a smart move.  Name-dropping Harrison Wright was a sweet move.  Bringing Cyrus back into the fold was the right move.  Killing Jake's wife Elise instead of dragging out her storyline was a hope-restorative mood.

Making Papa Pope the Man with the Plan, Mellie's new right arm, the ultimate fixer who made the Prez's inevitable impeachment (and likely imprisonment) was a move that unraveled all the other moves.

It started when someone put a hit out on Rowan (praise be) and failed.  He tries to get his daughter to rescue him, but Liv is willing to leave him for dead.  Now right there, I winced, 'cause I knew my uncle was going to have an issue with that.  Like, I know he's going to want to have words this evening about that.

But Liv eventually does come through for her dad (in a way), and for that I want to have words with Shondaland's writers.

So let me get this straight: After Mellie lies in court and wrecks her future, Olivia explains to Mellie that Papa Pope can fix everything and make all their problems go away if she uses her pull as a Senator to free him.  After revealing who Papa Pope really is and what he's done - including assassinating Mellie's son - Mellie still decides to go ahead and free him and bring him on her team.

But wait...there's more.

You wanna know how Papa Pope fixes everything?  By blackmailing the prosecution.  How, you ask?  By revealing to them their dirty secrets via photos and documents.  But, you ask, isn't that just something Olivia and her people could've done them-damn-selves?  Why yes, of course.  They could have.  It's what they do, or at least used to.

So now, Shonda has finally hit the reset button she promised in Season 4, but the problem is, Huck, Quinn, and Jake are basically useless.  Marcus Walker - in some ways - is just Harrison-lite and band-aid being slapped on this show's cancer.  Papa Pope is back with Tom the Teutonic Bodyguard in tow...despite fan protest to just let...them...go.  Olitz is still going strong (*yawn*), and Mellie's warpath is just business as usual.  Things have changed on Scandal...how, exactly?

Just now finding this; would've used it sooner...
Nate Lahey's wife finally died on How to Get Away with Murder after Nate assisted in her suicide.  And in his grief, he had the balls to yell at Annalise for "stealing" away the time he should have spent with her but couldn't because of his prison and court time...talmbout "when she needed me."

Okay...rewind to Season 1.  Does anyone recall someone putting a gun to Nate's head and forcing him to have an affair with Annalise while his wife was rotting from cancer?  I mean, didn't she need him then?  Yeah sure, like the New Roomie says, he's grieving, but still...how quickly they forget!

I'm not going to bother bringing up Michaela Pratt in detail this week because she didn't do much except to repeatedly remind Wes that he let her have sex with Eggs 911 a.k.a. Levi.  She has zero fucks to give about whether or not Rebecca is dead because all she can think about is the fact she was carrying on - for gods only know how long - with Eggs 911.  She says it over and over again like a punchline whenever she's about to walk off with her fellow mini-Keatings: "You let me have sex with Eggs 911" - it's amusing as hell.

This week, however, we finally found out exactly what Asher did at Trotter Lake.  Allegedly, he participated in a gang-rape, which is ironic considering how distraught he seemed at Bonnie being raped by her father.  I wonder how Annalise is going to react to this info?  Especially since she just had her team throw Asher's dad under the bus to save herself, her team, and her mini-Keatings, Asher included.

  1. We had 5 episodes of promise and they undid all of that in 45 mins. Faux spy games are back! White feminist queen got more unnecessary screen time.

At this point .... I can't. Never has a show been so horrible to its lead character. Even evil protagonists get better development and you still root for them. Olivia Pope gets nothing. What was the point of the last 5 episodes?

I'm hoping Asher had nothing to do with the gang-rape. Maybe he was hosting a party that it happened at or he knew who did it. Nate...FOH.

Good Lord, me too. Seems like Matt McGorry can't catch a break. If he's not a deadbeat dad on OITNB, then he's a possible rapist on HTGAWM. Why can't he just be the clumsy, awkward #Doucheface and let that just be the end of it?

  2. " Marcus Walker-in some ways-is just Harrison-lite and is just a band -aid being slapped on this shows cancer".

So, I wasn't the only one who thought this about Cornelius Smith Jr's character? When I first seen his character, I thought that Shonda realized her mistake of killing off Columbus Short's character and bringing him back then I had to come back to earth to realize that it wasn't him. Now, his initial appearance is impressive and he is a .like you said..is a great addition for the show, but Shonda is fooling no one. I think that she has some regrets about getting rid of Columbus and some of her fans may have expressed their dismay about it which may be way she added Cornelius's character on her show. In case that is what Shonda is feeling, she should have had Harrison be temporarily off the show until she was she wanted to do with Columbus's character.

I'm like you with Scandal. I have one eye open and closed to see some glimmer of hope for this show. Though I did find the surprise confession from Olivia and the Prez to be interesting, Idk..it still seems to be going too fast and somewhat unrealistic. I know what people can stay together for ages but how far is Shonda is willing to let this go? Will they get married or will she be another booty call for him and just drop her? I could be absolutely wrong and I want to be wrong, but I have yet to see a White man to make a Black/POC as their first lady in the White House...especially one who broke up a marriage. I know what this show is about " What if" fantasy, but I also like making realistic connections to the characters and lately with Scandal, I'm losing it.

I also will agree with you about Huck,Jake and Quinn and I think that Shonda has a deficiency making her characters more useful than what they are. Even though the excitement on Empire has cooled down, I will give Lee Daniels a little more credit with this characters on his show. Just about everybody on that show has a role on it. Even the most " boring " character on the show is alive whereas, Shonda is focused on her main characters and almost forget about the others. It's like she crams all of them together to make them interesting.

As a whole, the problem with many of the writers/producers is that they are bringing out the excitement to early, and talking out the formula of what made the shows work in the first place.

That's pretty much what I figured. Like, I don't think Columbus Short should've gotten off scott-free, but there are ways to discipline wayward actors and "inspire" them to stay out of trouble. Shonda could've made counseling and drug-testing mandatory, she could've withheld the majority of his salary and implemented a gag order during filming - there are many, many ways to whip someone onto the straight and narrow when you've got her kind of power.

  3. I didn't know that Wes (Alred Enoch) was in Harry Potter!
