Black Girl Music: Ladybug Mecca

Yeah, I'm thick like dat
I stack like dat
I'm down like dat
I'm black like dat

~ Ladybug Mecca, from "The Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)"
I'll admit, I was still a preteen when they dropped the immortal track "Rebirth of Slick," but some of y'all know what I mean when I talk about the late 1980s and early 1990s being a magical, mystical time in rap/hip hop.  Artists back then were not only writing deep, defiant, imaginative lyrics, but a lot were experimenting with various art forms to create transcendent music.

So it's no wonder that when Digable Planets reunited (for the second time) for a show on December 30, 2015, they did so to a sold-out crowd comprising some clearly devoted 1,400 fans.  And I'm not surprised that Ms. Ladybug Mecca got the loudest love when she hopped on the mic.

Like many folks, I wasn't thrilled when Digable Planets couldn't seem to stay together for more than 3-6 years at time, but I was glad Ladybug Mecca did maintain an indie career after they broke up the first time.  Or rather, she attempted to.  She released one full-length album, Trip the Light Fantastic, currently available on Amazon.com (gonna have to wait on my next check for that one).  The remix albums Doggstarr, Dogg Starr, and Dogg Starr House Mixes primarily revolve around - you guessed it - her one main solo hit "Dogg Starr", inspired by the Dogon Star.

Them lyrics, tho.  Them visuals, tho.

While I'm glad Digable Planets is back together, I still would like Ladybug Mecca to put out some new solo music. The talent is clearly there, and she could teach the latest generation of emcees a thing or two.
